Perverting Justice

Millions are upset over the brutal gang rape of a teenage girl in Kenya. Three of the men convicted of the crime were sentenced to mow the lawn around the police compound and then were released (Yahoo News, October 28, 2013). A spokesperson for one victims group observed “Letting rapists walk free after making them cut grass has to be the world’s worst punishment for rape… It’s an absolute failure of the entire system and an absolutely shameful response by Kenya’s police” (ibid.). More than one million people have signed a petition asking that the government get involved to bring justice. God’s word clearly states, “Cursed is the one who perverts the justice due the stranger, the fatherless, and widow” (Deuteronomy 27:19). Proper justice is very important to God. It is the reason why God provided specific statutes and judgments in the Bible. God’s very throne is founded on justice (Psalm 89:14). Jesus Christ also taught that “justice” is one of the most important aspects of God’s law (Matthew 23:23). Thankfully, with the return of Jesus Christ, the world will finally be judged with righteousness and truth (Psalm 96:13)! Western Access Through the Arctic!

With the thawing “northeast passage,” sea travel has increased through the Arctic. “Last year 46 ships sailed the route. More than 400 are expected this year.” Some estimate that the trading power of this Arctic passage could rival the Suez Canal—linking trade between Europe and Asia (The Times, September 17, 2013). At the same time, “The Russian Navy is moving to establish a ‘constant presence’ in the region, according to the military. A Soviet air force base is being rebuilt after two decades in mothballs” (ibid.). Russia’s aim is to maintain a “constant presence” in the Arctic and protect its assets. Bible prophecy reveals that near the end of the age, the European Beast power will become a major global trading power (Revelation 13:17). Ultimately, nations of the earth will be made rich through the “abundance of her luxury” (Revelation 18:3). However, this influential trading power will fall after a few years, and merchants of the earth will “weep and lament” over this demise (vv. 8-10). The opening of this northern trade route is occurring at the same time China is looking for a new trade and economic partner. If turmoil in the Middle East continues to grow, China and Russia may find that control of this northeast passage is important to their economic trade with Europe. U.S. Spying Implications

Nations spy on other nations—they have for a very long time—and most national leaders understand this (BBC, October 26, 2013). However, this fact does not make it acceptable to those being spied upon, nor does it make it right. In recent weeks, it has become clear that the U.S. National Security Agency was tapping phones of high-ranking leaders in France, Germany, Mexico and Brazil (ibid.; New York Daily News, October 21, 2013). U.S. ambassadors to both Germany and France have been “called in” and Chancellor Merkel even spoke to President Obama directly about the matter. While some world leaders may move on past this news, other leaders are shocked at this major breach of trust and many citizens are building resentment. One headline declares, “Europe falls out of love with Obama over NSA spying claims” (CNN, October 25, 2013). A Swedish journalist noted, “I blame Hollywood for the fact that Merkel, Cameron, Reinfeldt, Hollande and the whole European bunch have fallen in love with President Obama” (EU Observer, October 26, 2013). But, is Hollywood really at fault? Long ago God prophesied against modern Israelite nations, “All your lovers have forgotten you; they do not seek you; for I have wounded you with the wound of an enemy… For the multitude of your iniquities, because your sins have increased” (Jeremiah 30:14). God also noted that Israel “played the harlot even though she was Mine; and she lusted for her lovers, the neighboring Assyrians [modern Germany]… Therefore I have delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, for whom she lusted” (Ezekiel 23:5, 9). Bible prophecies foresaw a time when the friends and allies of modern Israelite nations will reject them and take them into captivity. God may use this current row to prepare for the fulfillment of these ancient prophecies.

Radical Pope Changing the Church?

Since taking office, Pope Francis’ comments on tradition and doctrine have unnerved conservative Catholics. In a July interview, the Pope was asked about homosexual priests. His response was, “Who am I to judge?” (New York Post, September 19, 2013). When asked about issues of abortion, homosexuality, and contraception, the Pope commented “The dogmatic and moral teachings of the church are not all equivalent. The church’s pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently… the church has the right to express its opinions but not to ‘interfere spiritually’ in the lives of gays and lesbians, expanding on [previous] explosive comments… about not judging homosexuals” (ibid.). Many think the Pope’s stance on these moral issues threaten the church (ibid.). Scripture reveals that at the end of the age, a major religious figure will come on the scene who will “intend to change times and law” (Daniel 7:25). This “lawless one” or “man of sin” will oppose and exalt himself “above all that is called God or that is worshipped”—he will do away with any semblance of biblical obedience (2 Thessalonians 2:3-10). This “man of sin” will ride on a European beast power and will be instrumental in causing separated “religious daughters” to return to the mother church (see Revelation 17). Implosion of a Superpower

As the U.S. government shutdown continues, world leaders are shaking their heads in disbelief. “Germans have found it hard to understand American lawmakers’ inability to resolve their budget disagreements in time to prevent a shutdown” and are left wondering “how things could have been allowed to get to this point and why there is so much poison in the system” (Der Spiegel, October 2, 2013). “What has already been apparent in America for a few years now is the self-destruction of one of the world’s oldest democracies… the great tragedy here is that this work of destruction isn’t being wrought by enemies of democracy” but is being accomplished “by the very people who are supposed to… preserve it” (ibid.).  Russia’s recent firm stance against the U.S. foreign policy in Syria showed its strength over U.S. weakness; and because of the U.S. absence in the recent APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) meeting, China’s assertiveness filled the void. “In Obama’s absence, other leaders take center stage at APEC meeting… Asia-watchers say [the] president’s decision may encourage China to be more aggressive in territorial disputes” (Al Jazeera, October 7, 2013). The U.S. has turned its back on God and rebelled against His commandments. Because of its sins, God said He would “make youths their leaders, and the unstable will govern them” (Isaiah 3:4, HCSB). If this trend continues, God will continue to “break the pride” of American power (Galatians 6:7; Leviticus 26:19). For more information, watch “Prophecy and the Decline of the Western Nations.”

Syria and the Decline of the West

The political maneuvering over how to deal with Syria’s chemical weapons reveals the growing weakness of the West—especially the U.K. and the U.S. With David Cameron’s failure to convince Parliament to support military action against Syria and Russia’s opportunity to “save” President Obama from an embarrassing congressional refusal to take action against Syria, “it suddenly became clear just how far the influence of the West has ebbed” (The Economist, September 21, 2013). At the same time, President Obama’s overtures to the Shiite nation of Iran may alienate America’s ally, Saudi Arabia, and its Sunni Arab neighbors, causing them to come together to challenge the growing influence of Shiite Iran in the Middle East (Statfor.com, October 1, 2013). The fading influence of the West and the coalescing of Arab Sunni nations may lead to the fulfillment of Bible prophecies. God warned the Israelite nations that if they “despise” His statutes and disobey His laws, He will “break the pride” of their power (Leviticus 26:14-19)—which is happening today. Daniel foretold that a “king of the south” (an end-time Arab federation) will emerge in the Middle East just before the return of Jesus Christ (Daniel 11:40-42). This “king of the south” will push against or attack a European “king of the north” and this confrontation will result in the European power moving into the Middle East (ibid.). The events we are witnessing today could ultimately lead to the fulfillment of these ancient prophecies. Costs of Life in the Fast Lane

Acceleration is part of modern life. “The process of mechanical acceleration began in the 19th century in conjunction with industrialization” and was intended to “create more available time for the individual” by shortening the amount of time needed to accomplish tasks (Der Spiegel, July 4, 2013). A recent book by German sociologist Harmut Rosa notes, “modern society does not enjoy the luxury of more leisure time… On the contrary, individuals suffer from a constant time shortage” (ibid.). Most people believe they should live life to the full, and “get all they can” from it. “As a result, more and more people suffer from depression and burn out” (ibid.). “Because society moves at an ever faster pace, political decisions have to be made more quickly too” (ibid.). In his book, Rosa refers to modern acceleration as the untamable “Leviathan” of this age. But solutions are in the Bible! Scripture states that at the end of the age, “many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase” (Daniel 12:4). Solomon warned against the obsession over new knowledge and new ideas (Ecclesiastes 12:12). He revealed that “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression” (Proverbs 12:25). Paul warned of the need for “redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15-16). By staying close to God, setting goals, and avoiding the traps of greed, we can build habits and avoid the addiction of acceleration. “The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty” (Proverbs 21:5). Preacher Arrested for Free Speech

After years as a Deputy Sheriff in Los Angeles County, Tony Miano became a full-time preacher. Recently he was arrested for “hate speech” after a sermon preached on the streets of London (Telegraph, July 4, 2013). The sermon cited actions God labels sins, including homosexuality. An offended woman reported Miano’s preaching. Police arrested Miano, held him for six hours, took his fingerprints and DNA, and then released him without charge (ibid.). Miano commented about his experience: “it became apparent that the interrogation was about more than the incident that took place in the street but what I believed and how I think… I was being interrogated about my thoughts… that is the basic definition of thought police.” He noted he “had arrested many people in his career but never over something they believed” (ibid.). Hate speech has become a broad “catch-phrase,” often applied unjustly. God warned that we are not to “pervert justice” or “show partiality” (Deuteronomy 16:19). He warned against “[following] a crowd to do evil” (Exodus 23:2). As the values of society change, increasing numbers of people are experiencing persecution for Bible-based comments, despite “laws on the books” in their nations protecting free speech. God warns about those who put evil in the place of good (Isaiah 5:20). For more on this vital topic, view our Tomorrow’s World telecast on “Modern Morality and the Ten Commandments.

Egypt in Turmoil Again!

After almost two years of “democratic rule,” Egypt is again in turmoil. Last week, the military forced President Mohammed Morsi out of office and installed an interim government (Telegraph.co.uk, July 8, 2013). On Monday, 51 people were killed as the military apparently opened fire on a crowd allegedly trying to storm a barracks where Mr. Morsi may have been held. The killings have added fuel to an already raging political fire, with the Muslim Brotherhood now calling for a public uprising (ibid.). Some think a Syrian-type civil war could emerge in Egypt (ibid.). One imam called on God to revenge Himself on General Al-Sissi, the Egyptian military leader, who is himself Muslim, and all anti-Morsi supporters (Deutsche Welle, July 8, 2013). Some analysts believe recent events in Egypt demonstrate that the military is really in power, despite political figureheads (Stratfor, July 3, 2013). Will the situation in Egypt devolve into all-out civil war? Ultimately Egypt will join a regional political and military power that the Bible refers to as the King of the South (Daniel 11:40-43). This Islamic power will challenge, but ultimately be overrun by, the King of the North (the European Beast power). Thus, Egypt will temporarily emerge from its current turmoil to fulfill these ancient prophecies. Circumventing Disease Man’s Way

Britain may allow a controversial technique to create babies using DNA from a mother, father, and a donor” in order to help prevent the spread of rare genetic diseases (Associated Press, June 28, 2013; Telegraph, June 28, 2013). Millennia ago, God promised to protect His people from diseases if they would choose to obey His laws and statutes (Exodus 15:26; 23:25). Good health is a reward God will give for obedience to His laws. Yet, today, science is trying to bypass God’s laws and prevent disease and disability by genetic manipulation. This allows people to continue breaking God’s laws without any consequences. With scientific advancements, not only are people left with the belief that they do not need God’s laws to “prevent” sickness and disease, but they are also be left with the attitude, “who needs God as a healer?” Although science may discover how to reduce physical disease and disability through genetic manipulation, human choices are destroying society through decadence, selfishness, and greed—as Adam and Eve chose to follow their own way nearly 6,000 years ago.
