This week, we note some dramatic shifts in Europe that are of great significance to those who understand Bible prophecy. Also, some introductory remarks about “Colony Collapse Disorder.”
The Vatican recently called for the establishment of a global financial authority of “universal jurisdiction.” Wallace Smith comments on what this means in the light of Bible prophecy.
Come October 22, 2011 another false “doomsday” date was demonstrated to be nonsense, increasing the chance that more individuals, including professing Christians, will begin to ignore prophecy and develop a cynicism that plays right into the devil’s hands.
From the “Tea Party” to the “Occupy Wall Street” movement, it seems everyone thinks Jesus is on their side. But what side is Jesus really on? What is His opinion of this world’s politics? Find out in this week’s informative video-cast!
Mr. Wallace Smith is back with another video-cast. This week, he gives us a quick overview of what is going on in the news.
He opens by mentioning how Europe needs Germany, and how this ties in with Bible prophecy that foretells a “Beast” power rising, a topic covered in more detail by The Beast of Revelation—a booklet published by the Living Church of God.
Continuing, he points to an article mentioning that consumers in the United States are spending more—even while incomes are dropping and the unemployment rate is rising. Seventy percent of the U.S. economy, he explains, is based on its citizens’ spending. When citizens are spending beyond the level they can afford, this does not bode well for the future of their nation’s economy.
Turning to the Middle East, Mr. Smith sums it up with a keyword: “Volatility.” People across the Middle East are clamoring for change, but do not seem to know what kind of change they really want.
A second keyword that is vital for understanding world events is: “Repentance.” Nations that are disobeying God, and that are squandering blessings God gave them long ago, are fulfilling Bible prophecies revealed thousands of years ago. All these events, Mr. Smith reminds us, can be understood more clearly through the light of Bible prophecy.
Dr. Meredith’s topic asks the question, “What is the real cause of America’s demise?” He points out that most people will point to one or two immediate factors, but will neglect the “big picture.” There is, however, a cause behind every effect. A nation that only treats the symptoms of its problems, putting “Band-Aids” on them without regard for the deeper concerns, will not prosper.
A society that does not follow God’s ways will experience terrible repercussions. Dr. Meredith points out that the Western nations have turned their back on God and His laws. America has said, “God, get out of our lives!” So, He has indeed done that! God has put into place real laws for humanity to abide by. Those laws are real, just like the law of gravity—if you break it, it breaks you! In a society that turns its back on God, things must and will go wrong.
Dr. Meredith explains that it is not enough to pay “lip service” to God. Many people say they are obeying God, even while they murder one another and violate one after another of the Ten Commandments. Such people are practicing lawlessness, and they will have to experience many problems that could be solved easily if they instead lived by the Ten Commandments. This is not some obsolete teaching that Jesus did away with; Christ Himself explained that those who keep God’s commandments will be called “great” in the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 5:19). To the extent that we obey God, things will not need to go wrong for us!

This week’s podcast:
Reading from news headlines, we learn that Americans throw away more than 25 percent of all their food—amounting to 96 billion pounds of food per year, or 263 million pounds per day—3,000 pounds per second. What a staggering statistic! Yet despite so much waste, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reports that no U.S. state has an obesity rate lower than 20 percent!
Our discussion with Mr. Bonjour reminds us that not all nations consume—or waste—as much food as the U.S. does. Consider these facts from the
• Hunger is the world’s number one health risk.
• One out of four children in developing countries is underweight.
• There are more hungry people in the world than the combined populations of the U.S, Canada and the European Union.
On this topic, Mr. Bonjour urges Heads Up listeners to read “Why Worry About Waste?”—a powerful article by Mr. Rod McNair in the September-October 2011 issue of Tomorrow’s World magazine. In his article, Mr. McNair offers us hope from God’s word: “Truly, modern society has been seduced into adopting a culture of wastefulness. Thankfully, this will change under the rule of Jesus Christ in the Millennium.”
What can we do? Mr. Bonjour urges us to follow the Bible’s admonition to be self-disciplined, to do the things of God and to love our neighbors as ourselves. With God’s help we have the power to make good choices and live in a way that is pleasing to Him and is good for the world around us.

In this week’s podcast, we welcome Mr. Rod McNair back into the studio to discuss an upcoming article he’s written, for the May-June 2011 Tomorrow’s World magazine, titled “Unlocking the Mystery of Marriage.”
We open up the podcast by reading from the headlines of a few news sources on topics ranging from Hawaii signing civil unions into law to the Obama Administration’s decision not to defend the Defense of Marriage act.
This leads us to the question: “Does marriage serve a necessary purpose?” Mr. McNair explains that marriage is not some instruction that was stumbled upon, and that in fact God created marriage for the benefit of mankind. Marriage also reflects God’s desire to bring children into his spiritual family.
We also discuss the impact marriage has on society. For example, if families stuck together, and parents were in healthy marriages, so many devastating statistics such as the teen pregnancy rate and rampant drug use would drop tremendously. We wrap up today’s show by sharing the titles of some books that back up the ideals of traditional marriage and urge listeners to keep an eye out for Mr. McNair’s article coming soon to the Tomorrow’s World magazine.
Mr. McNair’s suggested readings:
The Marriage Problem, James Q. Wilson, 2002.
Why Marriage Matters, Glenn T. Stanton, 1997.
Fatherless America, David Blankenhorn, 1995.

On this week’s Heads Up podcast, we welcome Dr. Scott Winnail back into the studio. His topic: the lack of love in modern society, and how this lovelessness breeds amorality and random acts of violence.
After reviewing some headlines describing horrific acts of violence against the elderly and the young, we consider some sobering facts. Dr. Winnail points out that the rate of suicide is actually higher than the homicide rate. What kind of despair and emptiness leads to such a society? Is there a spiritual force behind the physical facts? Dr. Winnail points out that there is indeed a satanic influence prophesied to increase at the end of this present age.
Dr. Winnail points out the increasing phenomenon of amorality—individuals who simply lack a moral compass. Amoral people are easy marks for Satan, the ruler of this present age, who wants to see increasing pain and suffering in the lives of those whom God wants to become members of His family.
Thankfully, a time is soon coming when people will grow up in an atmosphere of morality and hope, and the young and elderly will be safe, with random acts of violence a thing of the past. Dr. Winnail refers Heads Up viewers to the booklet, The World Ahead, What Will It Be Like? and Your Ultimate Destiny.

This week’s podcast is a special treat, and a milestone for Heads Up, as Mr. Wallace Smith presents our very first Heads Up Videocast! Mr. Smith will be familiar to most of our Heads Up audience as a presenter on the Tomorrow’s World telecast, as well as a writer for the Church publications and a contributor to the Heads Up podcast.
Mr. Smith opens by discussing the 6.0 magnitude earthquake that hit the Virginia/Washington DC area on Tuesday of this week. Earthquakes rarely affect this area of the United States, so it spread both panic and minor damage from DC to New York City.
The subject then turns to Hurricane Irene, which is forecast to reach landfall over the eastern U.S. and to have a powerful effect between the Carolinas all the way north to New York. He notes that, considering New York City’s status as a financial center, a hurricane there can have consequences extending across the U.S. and beyond.
Turning to a subject of particular personal interest (see his telecast “2012, Bible Prophecy and You!”), Mr. Smith briefly observes how some are continuing to promote the 2012 “non-pocalypse,” and notes that opportunists such as Harold Camping have created a market for those who will make money off his failed predictions.
