Can The Euro Survive?

After a short break Heads Up is back with new videos and new special guests!

In this week’s episode we welcome Mr. John Meakin to the show.

With the events of last Friday when the Greece bailout talks with her creditors stalled and Standard and Poors downgraded 9 eurozone nations, this subject just went straight back to the headlines and is clearly very important in its potential significance.

What’s With the Weather?

“The world has in recent years experienced a succession of extreme weather events: America has endured a veritable cocktail of hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, floods, droughts, and storms; in 2011 President Obama issued a record 99 major disaster declarations; flooding on an unprecedented scale inundated Thailand, China and Australia; a succession of extremely cold winters have proved costly in both northern and southern hemispheres. And this is only for starters…

This naturally leads to the question “What’s Up With the Weather?”

Our UK presenter, John Meakin, discusses in this podcast various background factors that are thought to be driving today’s climate and weather; humanly produced increases in carbon dioxide, ocean fluctuations, and especially the sun’s activities. Is it a warming world or a cooling world that is now dominating our weather and climate? You may be surprised by the answers, and especially by the intriguing twist in the conclusion that points to a little appreciated biblical perspective on the weather.”

Christ or Christmas?

This week, we welcome to the Heads Up podcast a very special guest, Mr. Wyatt Ciesielka. As the “Christian” world is getting ready for a holiday season, we decided to take a look at the true origins of Christmas, and what Christmas really is.

We open up by discussing how many are uncomfortable with the highly commercialized celebration of Christmas, but take part in that commercialized celebration anyway. Many assume that they would like to get back to the “real” Christmas, but they have no idea about the real origins of the holiday. Mr. Ciesielka helps us understand the historic origins of today’s Christmas practices.

As we find in the Catholic Encyclopedia, “Christmas was not among the earliest festivals of the Church. Irenaeus and Tertullian omit it from their lists of feasts…” (vol. 3, pp. 724, 728). Mr. Ciesielka reminds us that in the mid-1600s, many in England recognized Christmas as un-biblical, and that in 1659 the holiday was even briefly outlawed in the colony of Massachusetts!

In conclusion, we ask the question, “Do we know when Jesus was really born?” Not only is there no record of Jesus, the Apostles or the original Church observing Christ’s birthday, there is good reason to conclude that His birthday was in the autumn, not in the winter. Rather, there are other figures from myth and religion whose birthday is said to be on or near the Winter Solstice or December 25. Mr. Ciesielka demonstrates from the book of Acts that the first Christians observed the biblical holy days and did not observe a “Christmas” day.

This week, we welcome to the Heads Up podcast a very special guest, Mr. Rod King, Tomorrow’s World telecast presenter and United Kingdom Regional Editor for the Tomorrow’s World magazine.

Mr. King, Australian by birth, has for several years lived and worked in the U.K., so he brings a unique perspective on recent events in the European Union, and on how they will affect the Eurozone as well as neighboring countries and the United States.

In his comments, Mr. King touches on a number of areas of interest. How is Britain being affected by recent turmoil in the EU? How does Britain view the EU, and in turn how does the EU view Britain? What are Britain’s prospects if it withdraws from, or is excluded from, the EU? And what should observers watch for in the weeks and months ahead?

With his insider outlook and biblical perspective, Mr. King’s comments help us understand why the pace of events is speeding up so fast in Europe, and what Europe’s future might look like.

Who or What Is “the Beast”?

This week on Heads Up, we welcome Mr. Wyatt Ciesielka back into the studio to discuss a controversial and much-misunderstood subject: the “Beast” of Revelation.

We open up by discussing some common theories about the identity of the Beast. Some believe it is Islam. Others think it is the United States. For many years, people commonly assumed that it was the Soviet Union, though this theory has waned in popularity with the breakup of the Soviet Union.

Similarly, people have all sorts of ideas about the “mark of the Beast.” Is it a national identity card, as some countries already have and a few U.S. legislators have proposed be established? Is it a Social Security Number, as some assumed when Social Security was introduced more than 70 years ago. Others expect the “mark” of the Beast to be a microchip implanted beneath the skin, or an invisible tattoo.

Several years ago, an IBM technology seminar predicted that we would someday be able to see holographic images on cell phones, and would be able to interact with three-dimensional holograms of people they are talking to. This led some imaginative people to jump to the conclusion that people would be able to project, and then worship, some sort of “image of the Beast” on their cell phones, or even that demons might take control of cell phones to create images either of themselves or of the prophesied Beast.

Most people may find these ideas far-fetched. Yet there are some who really think of this as the fulfillment of Revelation 13:14-15: “And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.”

We are reminded that, as these speculations are increasing, the world’s “educated classes” are generally moving away from religion. Failed predictions, including those of Jesus Christ’s return, are among the disappointments that people cite when explaining their loss of faith. Even so, one poll shows that 41 percent of Americans expect Christ to return by 2050.

Mr. Ciesielka discusses some of the complexities of interpreting Bible prophecy, and reminds listeners not to be discouraged by those who offer wildly imaginative false interpretations of prophecy, and to recognize that it is important to let the Bible interpret the Bible.

Another important point Mr. Ciesielka brings out is that unless we do what Scripture instructs, we cannot expect to understand what Scripture teaches. We do not need to be scholars to understand the plain truth of Scripture, and we can be confident from Scripture that the Church of God is indeed teaching the truth.
